As a member of the Appeals Department, you will support the Appeals Project Manager, contributing where relevant to the co-ordination, growth and success of The Children’s Society’s national fundraising appeals – currently Christingle, Collection for children, Carol Singing, The Big Stitch, St George’s Day and National Coffee Morning. The role will also involve managing and developing cause related marketing and merchandise activities where appropriate.
You will need excellent written and verbal communication skills, enabling you to liaise with a wide variety of people both internally and externally. Experience and knowledge of managing customer relationships and an understanding of donor, supporter and church motivations through appeals would also be a significant advantage.
The flexibility and ability to manage your own workload, work autonomously, but also as part of a team to tight deadlines is essential, as are proven organisational and project management skills and excellent attention to detail. You will be able to set up and manage effective and efficient administrative systems and processes, conduct research and monitor and report on appeals as they progress.
Educated to at least ‘A Level’ standard or equivalent, you will have demonstrable experience of fundraising or marketing activities and initiatives. Past experience of the processes and procedures involved in running fundraising appeals is desirable. You must be computer literate and have a good knowledge of Windows XP – particularly Word and Excel.

Job purpose:
- To work with the Appeals Project Manager, so as to co-ordinate The Children’s Society National fundraising Appeals.
- To manage Cause Related Marketing and Merchandise activities where relevant.
Key activities:
- To support the Appeals Project Manager in working to meet financial targets and realise investor potential for all appeals, while taking the lead role in specific Appeals as agreed each year.
- In conjunction with the Appeals Project Manager and Retail develop strategies for St George’s Day and National Coffee Morning fundraising appeals and also develop other strategies for all other activity, so as to increase the support for fundraising appeals.
- To develop Appeal plans for areas agreed with Appeals Project Manager and support the Appeals team on development of all other Appeals.
- To implement advertising & marketing promotion and mailing strategies as agreed with the Appeals Project Manager and monitor and evaluate their success
- To manage appeals input into the website as agreed with the Appeals Project Manager
- To ensure all data is recorded and stored accurately
- To initiate and maintain effective administrative systems and processes to so as to support the Appeals team.
- To work with the database team in order to achieve t accurate data selections and ensure codes are used correctly
- To effectively work with the Appeals Project Manager in order to monitor non-remitters and ensure these are being followed up
- To work with the press office so as to establish potential press and celebrity opportunities
- To co-ordinate with the Church Liaison Manager ensuring the correct messages are communicated
- To research information to be used in appeals
- To work with the volunteer and supporter development manager to extend the participation of supporters in fundraising appeals
Attainments:
In order to be considered for this post you will have to demonstrate that you already have
Experience
- A demonstrable experience of fundraising or marketing activities and initiatives.
- Knowledge of the church market and understanding of donor, supporter and church motivations through appeals is desirable though not essential
- Experience of the processes and procedures involved in running fundraising appeals
- Proficiency in Windows XP Microsoft Office, particularly Access and ExcelExperience in producing materials written to a very high standard and tailored to a diverse audience.
- Experience and knowledge of managing customer relationships
