Volunteer Role:
Volunteer Mentor
Responsible to:
Volunteer Co-ordinator
Location:
Various locations across the city to be negotiated.
Hours & timeframe:
Minimum 2-3 hours per week commitment for 6-12 months period.
Tasks:
- To provide one-to-one support to young people aged 11 – 25 who are Asylum Seekers/Refugees.
- To build and maintain mentoring relationships which support young people (in differing situations) to achieve their aims and objectives.
- To empower mentees to challenge existing systems/barriers that may discrimination access to support services and to raise awareness of their own experiences.
- To reduce the sense of stress and isolation experienced by Asylum Seekers and Refugees particularly those who have little or no parental/peer support.
- To work with the Volunteer Coordinator to negotiate referrals to other organisations/agencies providing various services for Asylum Seekers/ Refugees.
Key Activities :
- Being a mentor to Refugee/ Asylum Seeking young people aged between11-25.·
- Meeting on a weekly basis with mentees to provide support.·
- Produce a realistic action plan based on the mentees needs and requirements.·
- Support mentees with completing and understanding forms and other paperwork.· Letter writing ·
Skills Required:
- To act as an advocate and liaise with agencies and organisations on behalf of the mentee when necessary.
- Good communication skills written/verbal.
- Empathy.Integrity. Non- judgemental.
- The ability to support young people who may be experiencing complex and sensitive issues.
Training and support:
All volunteers will be provided with training as well as opportunities for ongoing support and supervision.
Other Information:
Volunteers will receive reimbursement for all out of pocket expenses
Volunteers will be managed in line with our Volunteer Policy
Volunteers will be required to undertake an enhanced Criminal Records Disclosure.
