Thanet Children’s Participation Project works with children and young people to enable them to engage in positive activities, contributing to their communities and making their voices and opinions heard.

Having successfully established activity clubs for children with disabilities in both Hythe and Ashford we are now seeking to appoint an additional number of fun-loving, creative, caring and approachable Support Workers for our Saturday Clubs. As a sessional worker your focus will be to provide support and positive play and leisure experiences for children and young people with disabilities, in a scheme that will run on 2 Saturdays per month in each area.

You will need to have some previous experience of working with children and young people with disabilities, a sound knowledge and understanding of the issues facing disabled children and young people, and the ability to engage with children using participative methods in an informal setting. You will be educated to GCSE standard. Reliability and punctuality are a critical element of this role.

Hours for these posts will be variable, though as an indication for candidates sessions usually run for 5 – 6 hours per Saturday. There may be a possibility for staff to work additional hours at either scheme during school holidays, though this aspect cannot be guaranteed. All appointments are subject to an enhanced CRB disclosure.

Sessional Support Worker

Disabled Children’s Saturday Club Activity & Play Scheme

Location:

Ashford Youth Centre, 2 Saturdays per month, + 2.5 days during October half-term.

Hythe Youth Centre, 2 Saturdays per month, + 2.5 days during October half-term.

Reward Band:

Project Worker 1 (SA) £7.69 – £9.95 per hour (Sessional) depending on experience.

Reporting to:

Senior Project Worker

Job purpose:

  • To provide support to children and young people with disabilities, enabling them to access play and leisure activities.

Key activities:

  • To provide child focused and positive play and leisure experiences for disabled children and young people.
  • To assist through key activities in helping disabled children and young people to develop the skills, knowledge and self-confidence, which will enable them to respond to the issues affecting them.
  • To help advocate on behalf of disabled children and young people to enable them to express their concerns and options on issues that affect their ability to live safely and to be included in their community.
  • To support children and young people on a range of issues presented, in an open, accessible and non-judgemental way.
  • To assist in the development of models of participation, enabling disabled children and young people to be heard in the decision - making processes that affect them.
  • To keep accurate and detailed records of the work, ensuring that the Society’s codes of confidentiality, standards, and Ofsted Regulations are adhered to.
  • To assist in developing and maintaining links with parents/carers, key agencies and community groups and through participation in meetings where relevant.
  • To ensure that information and concerns are shared with line management to support children and young people.
  • To assist (when appropriate) in the transportation of disabled children and young people and families, acting as an escort or authorised driver.

Attainments:

In order to be considered for this post you will have to demonstrate that you already have:

Experience

  • Previous experience, either paid or unpaid, of working with children and young people or of assisting in planning creative or leisure activities.
  • Experience of working within a team.

Qualifications

  • Educated to GCSE StandardWork based knowledge.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues facing disabled children and young people.

Skills

  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.

  • Meet the needs of the children and young people attending play and leisure activities.
  • Make suggestions and contribute towards the improvement of ways of working with disabled children and young people.
  • Carry out work as instructed and to required Children’s Society and Ofsted Out Of School standards.
  • Take some initiative and demonstrate a willingness to learn.
  • Ensure that you are understood by others and communicate effectively.
  • Relate well to team members and children and young people.
  • Work well in a team and respond well to feedback.

Special Job Circumstances:

This post has the following special circumstances:

  • To work directly with disabled children and young people with either moderate or severe learning impairment, and attend to their individual care needs, which may include administering medication, lifting and personal care tasks.
  • Work will take place within groups where qualified staff will be present at Weekend and occasional evening meetings/training.
  • Ability to supervise and keep safe children and young people with challenging behaviours.
  • Must be reliable and punctual.
