We are looking for a volunteer to support the staff and clienmts of the New Londoners project.
New Londoners have been working with refugees, Roma and homeless families in Newham since 1996. The team helps young people to fulfil their individual potential, and challenges the systems that keep them marginalised.
What we do:
We help children and young people to overcome the immediate obstacles that are preventing them from accessing essential services such as decent legal representation, education and habitable accommodation.
We help children to meet new people, reflect on their achievements and build up their self-worth.
We lobby and campaign, raising awareness of their rights and to challenge the prejudice they face.
Our projects:
- The Young Refugees Project. Provides advice and advocacy to ensure young refugees aged 12-19 access services such as education, social services and immigration.
- The Leading Edge Project. Ensures young refugees aged 11-18 are included and achieving in education.
- The Mentoring Scheme. Provides volunteer mentors for refugee young people in Newham and its neighbouring boroughs
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This is primarily an administrative role involving supporting the project staff by:
- Preparing case files
- Carrying out evaluations with clients
- Planning social activities and workshops
- Making phone calls
- Updating databases
- Preparing mailouts
If the volunteer wishes, the role may also occasionally involve:
- Supporting caseworkers (particularly in the areas of housing, health, education and social services), for example through accompanying young people to appointments.
- Youth work (eg trips, youth clubs and groups, participation projects)
- One-to-one support, advice and orientation for young refugees in London.
- Skill sharing eg. English language, literacy and numeracy.

VOLUNTEERING CONDITIONS
- To undertake a set training programme organised for volunteers at The Children’s Society.
- To be supported by the volunteer’s supervisor through one-to-ones. At these, further training, developmental and support needs will be discussed.

- To be available for training and meetings during weekdays.
- To be available for volunteer work on a regular basis, eg. at least one weekday per week
- To work within The Children’s Society policies and procedures.
- Expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with the volunteer policy.
- The role is subject to volunteers agreeing to a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.
