I’d previously worked as a primary school teacher for three years, followed by six months of temping. But I was drawn to The Children’s Society firstly because I agreed with the organisation’s Christian values. Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to be Christian to work here – it’s more about understanding and sympathising with the approach. And in essence, that’s the most important part of my job – being involved in the amazing work that we’re doing.
I started out in People and Organisation Development, where I stayed for six very happy years. When the opportunity to progress to my current role came along, I was extremely happy to take it. I work with a great bunch of people who work directly with – and genuinely care about – children and young people. As a matter of fact, this is the longest I’ve ever spent in one organisation, which I think says a lot about the kind of place it is. Not only is career development actively encouraged, but often your job offers you the flexibility to stamp your own mark on it.
